As someone who owns a half dozen synthesizers, I really don’t ever do anything with them other than futz with them endlessly. This week, I decided to challenge myself to actually record some songs. I decided a great way to do this is by doing a little EP of covers from one of my favorite bands, andrewjacksonjihad.
I decided to start with Black Dog, since it was a shorter one and I always get the words stuck in my head. You can hear a live version of the original here: http://andrewjacksonjihad.bandcamp.com/track/black-dog
My favorite line in the song is “I’m self-loathing, but I love singing.”
(There’s also a great version on their Rompilation comp, featuring Kepi Ghoulie and an extended outro)
If you don’t know Andrew Jackson Jihad — do yourself a favor and go pick up their records. I wholeheartedly recommend their last album, Knife Man — it’s one of the more inspiring records I’ve heard in a long time. Their new album Christmas Island is available for pre-order now: http://www.onchristmasisland.com/
